Barbara Ann Newberry

Barbara Ann Newberry, 74, passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2012, to be with our Lord. She was born May 2, 1937, in Brownsville, Texas to James Alton and Virginia Elizabeth Bennett.

Barbara grew up and lived all her life in Olmito, Texas.  A graduate of Los Fresnos High School, she received her BA, MA, and MLS degrees from Pan American University and Sam Houston State University respectively.  She was a dedicated teacher and librarian employed with Brownsville ISD and Los Fresnos CISD for over 30 years combined.  After retirement from public education, she worked for UTPA as a teacher supervisor and mentor.  Most recently, Barbara was secretary for the Olmito Irrigation District #20. 

 This loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother enjoyed life and the beauty of nature around her.  Her cheerful and caring disposition will always be remembered.

Barbara was preceded in death by her father. James Alton Bennett, Sr.; mother, Virginia Elizabeth Bennett; and brother, James Alton Bennett, Jr.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, John L. Newberry ;  daughter, Sharron Ann Guzman (Fred) of Mission, TX; grandchildren, Charlie Guzman (Belinda) of Edinburg, TX, and Kenny Guzman of Mission, TX.; great-grandchildren, Chris, Anthony, and Benjamin Guzman.  She is also survived by her uncle, Clarence “Sonny” Knight (Doris) of Sun City, Florida; aunt, Billie Sutter (Jack) of Brownsville, TX; sister-in-law, Barbara Bennett of Spring Branch, TX; niece, Michele Bennett of Spring Branch, TX;  nephew, Bruce Bennett (Kari)of Kyle, TX: great-nephew, Justin Bennett; and great-niece, Sydnee Bennett.

Visitation will be from 4pm to 7pm on Thursday, May 3, 2012 with a Memorial Service to be held at 7:00 at Sunset Funeral Home in Los Fresnos, Texas.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society.
